Abstract :
Allegory is a form of extended metaphor in which objects, persons, and actions in a narrative are equated with meanings that lie outside the narrative itself. The underlying meaning has moral, social, religious, and political significance. Attār and Mowlānā Jalāl-al Din Rumī, the two famous Persian poets, have employed allegory in their poems. The present article, by looking at the role of allegory in the works of Attār and Mowlānā Jalāl-Din Rumī, tries to show the social conditions in which they lived.
