Abstract :
The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between childhood maltreatment and non-suicidal self-injury, taking into account the mediating role of positive and negative dimensions of self-compassion. The current study is basic in its purpose and descriptive-correlational in its approach to data collection. The statistical population included adolescents aged 13 to 18 who were enrolled in the 2021-2022 school year. A convenience sample of 575 adolescents was selected, and completed Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ; Bernstein et.al, 2003), Inventory of Statements About Self-Injury (ISAS; Klonsky & Glenn, 2009), and Self-Compassion Scale (Neff, 2003).The results were analyzed using structural equation modeling and showed a direct and statistically significant correlation between childhood maltreatment and non-suicidal self-injury among adolescents. Also, the model based on the mediating effect of positive and negative dimensions of self-compassion between childhood abuse and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents had a good fit with the data. As a result of confirming childhood abuse as a variable related to self-injury and also confirming the mediating role of self-compassion in this relationship, by identifying and training focused on self-compassion to adolescents who have been abused in childhood, non-suicidal self-injury can be prevented.
