Abstract :
Background and Objectives: Nowadays, one of the major traffic problems is vehicle safety and pollutant emissions of them. As a result, design and implementation of periodic control systems in field of safety and environment for vehicles has found special position on the traffic rules in different countries. This system which is known as vehicle inspection includes rules, tests and standard procedures for each test. Because of the vehicles are the mail cause of air pollution in metropolitans, this research has studied effectiveness assessment of vehicle inspection on Tehran's air quality.
Materials and Methods: For this study, data and information for all of tests, during 2010 to 2014, has collected and analyzed from vehicles inspection centers in Tehran. Also, this study has compared between number of visits to vehicle inspection centers with effectiveness of them on air pollution quality in Tehran.
Results and Conclusion: The results show that in the period of this study, on average 13.41 percent of failed numbers on vehicle inspection is caused by pollution intensity of exhaust gases. On the other hand, increase legal exemption period for cars zero km from 2 to 5 years, the number of vehicles which go to inspection center has reduced 32 percent. According to statistical analysis, vehicle inspection in less than 2 years, is suitable with useful life of catalyst and as a result, reducing the amount of exhaust pollutant gases will improve air quality in metropolitans such as Tehran.
