Using environmental, social and governance factors in investment decisions

Abstract :

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) reports on individual investors’ decision-making in the capital markets of Iran and Turkey. Data for this study were collected from 232 individual investors (132 Iranian investors and 100 Turkish investors) over three consecutive years from 2002 to 2013. Logistic regression analysis and MANOVA multivariate analysis of variance were used to examine the impact of independent variables including environmental impacts, environmental policies, employee responsibility, partner responsibility, social responsibility, corporate governance, and risk management on investment decisions. The results showed that all variables have a significant impact on investment decisions. However, negative coefficients of some variables indicate investors’ concerns about potential costs associated with ESG policies. The largest negative impact was related to the employee responsibility variable, while environmental policies had the least negative impact. Cost-benefit analysis (ROI and NPV) also showed that policies such as reporting transparency and energy resource management have high returns and can help reduce investor concerns. The study revealed significant differences between the two markets studied and confirmed the impact of economic conditions on investor behavior. The findings emphasize the importance of greater transparency in ESG reporting and providing accurate information about the benefits and costs of these policies. Future research could provide deeper insights in this area by expanding the geographical scope and focusing on different industries.
