Abstract :
This study evaluated the effects of oregano extract combined with cold plasma irradiation on the healing of full-thickness skin wounds infected with Staphylococcus aureus in an animal model (rat). In this study, 36 adult male Wistar rats weighing 200 to 300 grams were used. First, wounds were surgically created in the area between the two shoulder blades of the rats, and after inoculation of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria at the wound site, the rats were randomly divided into four treatment groups: control group, oregano extract treatment group, cold plasma irradiation treatment group, and combination treatment group. Oregano extract and cold plasma with a frequency of 25 kHz and a voltage of 5 kV were applied topically to the respective groups. The treatment process continued for ten days, and the reduction of microbial load and histopathological changes were examined. Both treatment methods independently significantly reduced the microbial load at the wound site and accelerated the wound healing process. Treatment with oregano extract and cold plasma irradiation significantly accelerated the healing process of wounds. However, the combination of oregano extract and cold plasma irradiation showed better results on the third, seventh, and tenth days than independent treatment with either method.
