Two-Faceted Ideas of God and Human in Islamic and Emerging Mysticism; Comparative Study of Rumi and Paulo Coelho Mysticism

Abstract :

The basis of concept of mysticism is based on the knowledge of the truth and the realization of peace and happiness of human beings, but the fact is that in practice, multiple, different and sometimes conflicting interpretations of this concept have been made, which has led to the formation of various forms such as religious mysticism (with different sub-branches) and New mysticisms have emerged, each emphasizing and focusing on different aspects of mysticism. This study aims to compare the position of God and humans in two schools of Islamic and emerging mysticism with an emphasis on the works of Rumi and Paulo Coelho. The main question of the current research is: "What is the position of God and man in the works of Rumi and Paulo Coelho?" The findings of the research using the analytical descriptive method and library resources showed that in Rumi's works as a representative of Islamic mysticism, God is the centrality and basis of mysticism and the acquisition of knowledge and reaching the truth, but in the works of Paulo Coelho, as a representative of emerging mysticism, man is the basis and centrality of mysticism. This issue can be investigated based on the application of the four concepts of Sharia-oriented versus Sharia-averse, spiritual love versus material love, Christianity versus reincarnation, and rationalism versus anti-rationalism.
