Identifying the reasons for using textbooks in high school students: A qualitative study

Abstract :
The use of textbooks in schools, especially in high school students, is very common, and experts have expressed various opinions and criticisms regarding the consequences of this phenomenon. The aim of this research was to investigate the factors affecting the use of textbooks in high school students in Hormozgan province. This qualitative research was conducted using thematic analysis. The statistical population consisted of high school students in Hormozgan province, and purposive sampling was used. A total of 31 students, managers, teachers, and school counselors from girls' and boys' schools were selected as the research sample, and the reasons for using textbooks in high school students were evaluated using a semi-structured interview tool. After analyzing the interview texts, the results were reported in the form of primary, axial, and overarching themes. Accordingly, 51 primary codes, 12 axial codes, and 6 overarching themes were generated. Personal factors, school-related factors, family-related factors, factors related to textbooks, factors related to entrance exams, and macro factors are the six overarching factors influencing the use of textbooks in students. The research findings were described and explained, and it was suggested that in order to prevent the negative consequences of excessive use of textbooks, a deeper look should be taken at the various causes of this phenomenon, and solutions such as addressing economic problems and income inequality in fields and professions, changing the student admission system, improving the quality of the educational system, and reviewing the laws on the publicat
