Abstract :
purpose: purpose of this research aims to examine the effectiveness of implementing STEM- based teaching on mathematics teachers. The main objective is to assess the changes made in the teaching and learning math using the modern STEM approach and to compare it with traditional teaching methods.
Method: This research was applied in terms of purpose and quasi-experimental in terms of method, with a pre-test and post-test type with two experimental and control groups. The statistical population of this study includes all mathematics teachers in District 15 of Tehran, and the sample consists of 30 mathematics teachers selected through a convenient sampling method. In the experimental group, the concepts of geometric volumes were taught using a STEM-based teaching approach (a combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with a focus on enhancing problem-solving skills and critical thinking in students. In contrast, in the control group, the concepts of mathematics volumes were taught using traditional teaching methods. For data collection, a researcher-made mathematics test was used, the validity and reliability of which were assessed. The questions of this test covered problem-solving abilities in the topic of geometric volumes. The results were analyzed using SPSS software and an independent-samples t-test to compare the experimental and control groups.
Results: The findings showed that students who were trained through STEM methods demonstrated higher abilities in problem-solving and critical thinking in the topic of geometric volumes.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the research suggests that implementing the STEM approach can be an effective method for teaching geometric volumes in mathematics by teachers, as it benefits both student learning and teachers' professional development. However, the implementation of STEM poses numerous challenges for teachers, especially in terms of time management and adapting this approach to current curricula. Accordingly, specialized training and continuous professional development are of great importance for teachers so that they can acquire the skills needed to implement this method correctly and effectively and improve the quality of mathematics education.
