Urban Public Spaces for the Elderly: A Case of District 1 in Kerman

Abstract :

Creating age-friendly urban environments has become increasingly important as the elderly population grows. Enhancing the quality of urban public spaces, particularly urban furniture, plays a critical role in improving the well-being of older adults. This study is applied in purpose and descriptive-analytical in nature. It aims to assess and organize urban public spaces for the elderly, focusing on District 1 of Kerman. Data were collected using library research and a survey-based method. A standard questionnaire was developed to evaluate the area and distributed to 30 experts using a snowball sampling technique. For data analysis, the t-test was used for data validation, the Pearson correlation test examined inter-variable relationships, and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test assessed data normality. The reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.79. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) modeling and SPSS software were used for final analysis. The results indicate that District 1 of Kerman is in poor condition regarding elderly accessibility and usability. Among the evaluated indicators, "communication and access" was identified as the most critical factor (final score: 0.5027), followed by the "physical-structural" index (0.0430), and the "urban furniture" index (0.4737).
