Analysis of Interrogative Movement in Bushehri Dialect Based on Minimalist Approach

Abstract :

This study aims to examine the movement of interrogatives in the Bushehri dialect based on Chomsky's (1995) minimalism program and evaluate the governing rules of minimalism regarding this movement in this dialect. In the framework of this linguistic theory, the derivation of interrogative sentences in different languages is a characteristic function of the movement or non-movement of the Wh-question word. According to this approach, active or non-active Wh-question word is based on its place (in-situ) or wh-movement. In the present qualitative study, interrogative sentences in the Bushehri dialect have been reviewed in terms of syntactic or non-syntactic movement, motivation of movement, mandatory or optional movement, and its landing place of the wh-question word. The data were collected in the corpus method gathered among Bushehri speakers and were analyzed descriptively. Results reveal that the interrogative movement of Wh-questions in the Bushehri dialect is optional and non-syntactic but it holds a pragmatic basis. The condition of contiguity and the limitation of structural dominance does not limit the movement of interrogative words in this dialect. Placing question words in different places in this dialect can be justified with reasons such as emphasis or foregrounding, and thematization.
