Bilateral relationship between level of mandatory disclosure and market-based performance in the firms listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange

Abstract :
Purpose: A good disclosure improves the accuracy of analysts' forecasts of future years' profits. Companies disclose information either compulsorily or voluntarily. The Securities and Exchange Organization, as the operator of the capital market, has prepared rules and regulations, and all companies listed on the stock exchange are required to comply with mandatory disclosure requirements fully.
Methodology: This research reports the results of the experimental investigation of the relationship between the mandatory disclosure level and the market-based performance of the companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange in the period after the development of standards and regulations. It also compares market-based performance evaluation criteria before and after the development of standards and regulations. The main purpose of the current research is to investigate the correlation between the level of mandatory disclosure and the market-based performance of 64 companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange from 1998 to 2022. For this purpose, the system of simultaneous equations was estimated using the two-stage regression method. Tobin’s Q ratio, price-to-profit ratio and added market value are considered as market-based performance criteria and an unweighted index with 293 components is used to measure mandatory disclosure in annual reports.
Findings: The estimation results show that there is a two-way relationship between the level of mandatory disclosure and market-based performance in companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange, and all the performance evaluation criteria, except Tobin’s Q, have a significant difference in the period before and after the development of standards and regulations.
Originality: Mandatory disclosure of information leads to change and improvement of returns and stock prices of companies.
