Abstract :

In the Koroğlu epic, women are portrayed as proud, beautiful, and positive figures, in contrast to most traditional texts where women rarely had prominent roles and were sometimes depicted with negative traits. The story of Koroğlu is filled with women who abandon a comfortable and luxurious life, choosing a challenging path toward freedom and justice. Women in this epic play influential and constructive roles, characterized by wisdom, eloquence, problem-solving in critical matters, thoughtful behavior, and sacred, pure love. These women are active, not passive, and their actions contribute to the stability of their homeland and family. They choose their life partners with love and careful judgment, refusing to enter into unwise marriages. All pre-marriage customs, such as engagements and wedding ceremonies, are observed for them. Generally, the women in this epic can be divided into two groups: the first group consists of key characters with prominent, constructive roles, while the second group consists of minor characters who are influenced by other major figures. This study, based on qualitative content analysis, examines the role and character of women in the Koroğlu epic through a documentary approach.
