Abstract :
Mercaptans (thiol) are malodorous contaminants not compatible with our environment. Methyl mercaptan, among thiols, is a malodorous toxic compound with a very low odor threshold which is often obtained from natural resources, crude oil refining processes, wood pulp industry, operations on garbage and energy-related activities. Because of the problems caused by mercaptans in oil industry or natural gas processing (such as considerable damages to transmission network) due to the existence of corrosion processand gas using systems, mercaptan concentration in natural gas is expected to be less than 2-5 ppm; and this gives rise to the topic of the separation of mercaptan from natural gas. Most modern processes for the removal of mercaptan are based on adsorption and chemical reactions. In this paper, the removal of mercaptan from natural gas by adsorption is studied.
