A Survey of Corrosion and Scaling Potential in Drinking Water Distribution System of Ahar
Subject Areas : The Application of Chemistry in Environment
Keywords: drinking water, parameters, corrosion indices, scaling and corrosion potential,
Abstract :
Twenty samples of water were taken from different areas of city water distribution system of Ahar. The calcium hardness, alkalinity, TDS, temperature and total hardness were measured. Through the data obtained from above mentioned factors, Langlier, Ryznar, Puckorious parameters and aggressiveness indices were calculated. According to the value obtained for Langlier at this study and regarding its allowed range of (±0.5), it is concluded that water is susceptible to corrosion. Also, when the value of Puckorious index is more than 6, it is being corrosive, which in the case of this study is found to be 7.92. Also, the Ryzanc index value is 197 , which is much more than 7, indicating a highly corroding nature of water. Finally, if the aggressiveness index value is being between 10 and 12, indicating the fact that it should be corrosive, which in the case of this study is found to be 11.87. According to these findings it was concluded that drinking water of Ahar is corrosive. In order to control corrosion it is suggested that a laboratorial study , regarding to distribution system, should be carried out to adjust effective parameters such as pH.
