The Relationship between the Five-Factor Model of Personality and Happiness among University Students

Abstract :

The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship between the five-factor model of personality and happiness. The research method was descriptive of correlation kind. The cluster sample (N= 380, 281 females and 99 males) was selected from the population i.e. 14498 students of Payam-e-Noor University branches of Qazvin province during the academic year of 2010-2011. The five factors of personality as well as happiness were assessed with the revised NEO personality and the Oxford happiness inventories, respectively. The reliability for general factors of neuroticism, extroversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness was 0.78, 0.70, 0.69, 0.84, 0.87, respectively, and for Oxford happiness inventories the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.93.   The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation and the regression method. The results showed that among the five personality factors, happiness was positively and significantly correlated to conscientiousness and negatively and significantly correlated to neuroticism.
