Study on the influenceability and reception of French writers inspired by the books Golestan and Boustan of Saadi with a comparative approach

Abstract :

Since the first half of the 17th century, the name of Saadi, the great Iranian moralist poet, has spread in French and European literary circles thanks to Golestan, the first Persian literary work translated into French and to the two travelogues by Tavernier and Chardin. This aroused the curiosity of the French to know more about Persian literature. From that century, some French poets and writers such as La Fontaine, Diderot, Hugo, Renan, Barrès and Aragon were influenced by Golestan and later, to a lesser extent, by Boustan of Saadi. In this article, we have tried to study the degree of influence suffered by French writers who, during different centuries, have been inspired in one way or another by these two Persian masterpieces. After a comparative analysis of most of their works, we have come to the conclusion that, despite the reputation of Golestan and Boustan and the publication of numerous translations of them into French, the influence suffered directly by French poets and writers studied was on the whole less than the limit of our hypothesis, but on the other hand, their reception was much more than a simple imitation or adaptation.
