Comparing the Effectiveness of Neurofeedback Therapy and Cognitive Rehabilitation on Improving the Severity of Inattention/Hyperactivity/Impulsivity Symptoms in Children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Abstract :

The present study aimed to compare the effectiveness of neurofeedback therapy and cognitive rehabilitation on reducing the severity of inattention/hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms in children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test_post-test design and a two-month follow-up with a control group. The statistical population of this study included all children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Tehran in 2024. From this population, 48 eligible volunteers were selected by purposive sampling and allocated to two intervention groups and one control group (16 individuals per group). The Swanson et al. (1980) Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder questionnaire was used. The groups received neurofeedback and cognitive rehabilitation interventions, each in 20 sessions of 45 minutes (twice a week). The control group received no intervention. Research data before and after the intervention and two months later for follow-up were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni test by SPSS26 software. Comparison findings showed a significant difference between the two mentioned interventions on the variable of inattention/hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms (P<0.05); and neurofeedback therapy had greater effectiveness on inattention/hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms. Based on the findings of this study, both therapeutic approaches examined were effective in helping children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder to improve their lifestyle and increase efficiency. Therefore, it is recommended that mental health professionals such as counselors and psychologists utilize the interventions introduced in this research to support these children.
