Communitarianism vs. Liberalism: Reexamining Social Justice from Michael Sandel’s Perspective

Abstract :
Communitarianism, as a philosophical school in political theory, stands in contrast to the extreme individualism of liberalism, emphasizing the pivotal role of the community in shaping individuals' identities, values, and rights. Michael Sandel, a prominent communitarian theorist, critiques duty-based liberalism, particularly John Rawls’s theory of justice, asserting that social justice should be grounded in the common good and moral virtues derived from the social, cultural, and historical contexts of a community. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, this study first examines the characteristics of communitarianism and then elucidates the concept and principles of social justice from Sandel’s perspective. Sandel views justice not merely as the equitable distribution of rights but as the cultivation of virtues and deliberation on the common good, achieved through collective dialogue, the promotion of shared values, and governmental guidance toward perfectionism. The findings demonstrate that Sandel’s theory, by highlighting the interdependence of individuals and their communities, seeks to foster a just society that strengthens social solidarity, moral virtues, and the common good.
