Psychological Analysis of the Relationship between Families Cohesion and Students' Addiction Susceptibility

Abstract :

Objective: The present study aimed to measure the relationship between family cohesion and addiction among students of Tehran Azad University. This study examines how eight dimensions of family cohesion: attachment to mother and father, duration and place of interaction, emotional attachment, shared decision-making, quality of marital relationships, and parent-child relationship are related to addiction among students of Islamic Azad University, Tehran Branch (52.4% female, mean age = 23.14, standard deviation = 3.95).

Method: The statistical population of this study was students of Tehran Azad University, and the survey method and the 28-item questionnaire by Samani (2002) were used. To examine the relationship between family cohesion variables and addiction, data analysis was performed using SPSS software; the results indicate a positive and significant relationship (with a 95% confidence interval) between these variables.

Findings: Statistical analyses show that among the dimensions of family cohesion, emotional connection has the largest contribution to changes in addiction.

Results: The results show that deep emotional involvement and real presence in the family decision-making process are the strongest predictors of resistance to any tendency to use drugs, while the duration or location of joint interaction alone does not provide significant protection. The overall model explained a very high percentage of the variance in addiction tendency, which is evidence of the important role of empathetic communication and collaborative problem solving in the family environment.
