Evaluation of ultrasonography in the diagnosis of nasal fractures in dogs and its comparison with plain radiography.

Abstract :
One of the important causes of nasal fracture is trauma, which can be detected in clinical examinations and diagnostic imaging, but it should be noted that false fractures in the nose may be seen in radiography. In this study, the value of ultrasonography in diagnosing nasal fracture compared to plain radiography was investigated. Twelve dogs with suspected nasal fracture were evaluated by ultrasonography and radiography, and the results were compared statistically. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, positive and negative odds ratio, and accuracy with 95% confidence interval were calculated, and finally the accuracy of both tests was calculated. Results: Of the 12 patient dogs, 10 (33.83%) had fractures in clinical evaluation and 2 (66.16%) had no fractures. In the diagnosis of nasal fractures by ultrasonography, the sensitivity was 96.4%, specificity was 93.3%, and accuracy was 96%. In the radiography method, the sensitivity was 81.1%, specificity was 86.7%, and accuracy was 82%. The highest diagnostic sensitivity was in nasal bridge fractures (100% in ultrasonography and 92.6% in radiography), and the highest specificity in ultrasonography was in the diagnosis of external wall fractures (100%) and in radiography in the nasal bridge (50%). According to the results of this study, ultrasonography can be used as a non-invasive method with appropriate sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of nasal fractures.
