Linguistic Analysis of Surah “Al-Rahman” Based on the Radial Concepts of Prepositions (Ḥurūf Jarr) and Its Impact on the Translation of the Holy Quran: A Study of German Translations by Scheich Abdullah as-Samit, Frank Bubenheim, and Nadeem Elyas

Abstract :
In the present study, Arabic prepositions (ḥurūf jarr) and their German equivalents, prepositions (Präpositionen), were juxtaposed, and precise statistics from both languages
were presented through a case study of Surah Al-Rahman to comprehensively illustrate the similarities and differences between the prepositions in the two languages. The semantic extension observed in Arabic was also evident in German, and this cross-linguistic comparison revealed the sublime rhythmic beauty of the Holy Quran even in the German language—itself a manifestation of the Quran’s miraculous nature, which persists across all living languages of the world. The examined German translation adopts a free translation approach, yet the translator has endeavored to remain close to a literal translation to avoid distortion. While no translation can fully convey all the intended concepts, terminologies, and the rhythmic eloquence of the original Arabic text of the Holy Quran, nor perfectly preserve its literary devices in the target language, an exploration of Quranic translations into other languages demonstrates that literary embellishments, stylistic arrangements, and the harmonious composition of words—along with clarity of meaning—remain discernible. Furthermore, the German translation of the Holy Quran maintains the internal structure of the source text, and proper nouns are preserved in their original form
