Abstract :
Abstract The present study was conducted with the aim of modeling the structural equations of the relationship between anxiety sensitivity, defense mechanisms, and psychosomatic complaints based on the mediating role of behavioral inhibition systems. The research was applied in terms of purpose and correlational in nature in terms of the type of structural equation model. The statistical population consisted of all female adolescents (16 to 18 years old) studying in the academic year 1401-1402 in high schools in Tehran. The sample size included 620 female students who were selected through multi-stage cluster sampling. To collect the data, the Psychosomatic Complaints Scale by Takatao Sakata (2004), the Anxiety Sensitivity Questionnaire by Floyd, Garfield, and Mark (2005), the Behavioral Inhibition Systems Scale (Carver & White, 1994), and the Defense Styles Questionnaire by Andrews, et al. (1993) were used. The research data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 and PLS version 3.3 software. The direct effect of behavioral inhibition on psychosomatic complaints was not significant. The direct effect of anxiety sensitivity on behavioral inhibition and psychosomatic complaints was significant. The direct effect of defense mechanisms on psychosomatic complaints was significant, but the direct effect of defense mechanisms on behavioral inhibition was not significant. The indirect effect of defense mechanisms and anxiety sensitivity on psychosomatic complaints through the mediating role of behavioral inhibition was not significant. The results indicate that the proposed model had a good fit and can be a significant step in identifying factors affecting psychosomatic complaints in adolescent girls. Based on this, clinical psychologists and school counselors are recommended to reduce psychosomatic complaints in adolescent girls by providing interventions that reduce anxiety sensitivity and defense mechanisms
