Makoran, Iran's Hidden Geopolitical Treasure: A New Strategy for Development and Effective Presence in the International System

Abstract :

The Makoran region, as one of Iran’s most significant geostrategic areas, plays a crucial role in the country’s security, trade, and energy sectors. With direct access to open waters and a strategic position along international corridors, this region holds substantial potential for economic development and the enhancement of Iran’s geopolitical standing. The development of port infrastructure, transportation networks, energy facilities, and related industries can reduce Iran’s dependence on the Strait of Hormuz and enhance the security of international transit routes. However, Makran faces challenges such as regional competition, infrastructural deficiencies, security concerns, and insufficient investment. To capitalize on these opportunities and overcome the existing challenges, the formulation of a comprehensive and coordinated strategy is imperative. Sustainable development in Makoran, through targeted investments in key sectors, socio-economic improvements, and strengthened international cooperation, can elevate the region’s role in the global landscape. In this regard, fostering synergy among domestic institutions and attracting foreign investment are essential measures. This study focuses on the opportunities and challenges of Makoran’s development, proposing an innovative and integrated strategy for optimal utilization of its capacities.
