Post-structuralist semiotics of facade identity indicators in Pahlavi II residential architecture

Abstract :
Investigating the identity and meaning of the facades of residential buildings in Tehran, especially during the second Pahlavi period, with the aim of clarifying the challenges in the facades and identity of Iranian architecture since the beginning of the modernization of residential buildings in Iran, is the main issue of this research. The aim is to identify and analyze the identity signs in the facades of buildings that can help to better understand the developments in contemporary Iranian architecture. The lack of emergence of a process of identity evolution commensurate with the evolution of meaning for the Iranian urban audience reveals the necessity of conducting this research. In such a way that despite years of architectural changes, we still witness inconsistency in facades that requires a more detailed examination. The inconsistency between cultural identity and architectural signs in the facades of Iranian residential buildings is an issue that must be examined from its roots at the beginning of the entry of modernity into residential architecture in Iran. This is especially important in the contemporary world, where the identity and meaning of living spaces have become more important. Identification and analysis of identity signs in the research was carried out by presenting a post-structuralist semiotic model in material, physical, social and historical formats in semantic function. The innovation of the research, in addition to paying attention to the principles of developments leading to the identitylessness of residential facades in Iran, is the use of software analysis (Max QDA) in conducting qualitative research with an analytical-descriptive method relying on semiotics along with a survey and historical strategy, which was carried out for about 70 facade samples from Tehran's sixth district. Based on the results, four facade combinations were extracted in the samples, and meaningful and meaningless combinations were identified using post-structuralist semiotics and audience reading. Meaningful combinations had a structure resulting from the interaction and convergence of the three aspects of function, aesthetics and culture. Accordingly, two identity-creating and identity-destructive aspects were extracted in the combinations, which shows the innovation that modernism has created in creating the duality of meaning construction in urban facades in Iran. Using the provided patterns and models, it is possible to design facades that are in line with the needs of society both aesthetically and in terms of identity
