Abstract :
Introduction: In Islamic societies, mosques have historically served as vital bridges between popular culture and spiritual traditions. In the contemporary era, however, this connection has significantly weakened. Mosque architecture—once a profound expression of sacred meaning—has largely lost its transcendental essence. Iconic elements such as domes and minarets have often become superficial motifs, reducing the mosque to a mere site of ritual performance rather than a space for spiritual elevation. While various factors contribute to this decline, architecture remains a key determinant. This study explores how contemporary architectural paradigms can revitalize the cultural and social roles of modern Iranian mosques, transforming them into living, meaningful spaces once again
Methodology: The research employs a qualitative and comparative analytical approach grounded in an extensive review of scholarly literature. Data were gathered through systematic analysis of theoretical sources, peer-reviewed studies, and a structured questionnaire. The analytical process focuses on identifying and interpreting progressive architectural paradigms, emphasizing their intersections that foster participatory and multi-dimensional spatial experiences within religious settings. Particular attention is devoted to fluid and technology-oriented paradigms that integrate meaning, innovation, and user experience—thus enabling a renewed interpretation of the mosque’s role within the evolving socio-cultural context of contemporary Iran
Results: Findings indicate that contemporary architectural paradigms—especially fluid and technology-driven approaches—have a substantial positive impact on users’ spatial experiences within religious environments. These paradigms enhance individuals’ sense of belonging, spiritual perception, and satisfaction in engaging with mosque spaces. By promoting dynamism, adaptability, and the intelligent integration of technological systems, such approaches redefine the mosque as an inclusive platform for social, cultural, and spiritual interaction. The study ultimately proposes a conceptual model to guide architects and designers in enriching the sensory and visual qualities of worship spaces, deepening users’ emotional and spiritual connections, and revitalizing the mosque’s function in fostering cohesion and development within Islamic communities
Conclusion: In conclusion, the research highlights that creating meaningful mosque architecture in the contemporary era requires a dynamic, multidimensional approach that harmoniously integrates spirituality, technology, and human experience. Rethinking architectural paradigms and harnessing innovative technological capacities not only enhance the qualitative dimensions of worship environments but also facilitate a renewed human engagement with the sacred. The proposed conceptual model provides a strategic framework for architects and designers to consciously merge traditional and modern elements, transforming contemporary mosques into responsive, inspiring, and meaningful spaces that honor Islamic identity while addressing the perceptual and experiential needs of modern users
