Abstract :
The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between dark triad personality traits and online social communication with the mediation of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies. The design of this study was descriptive/correlational. The statistical population of the study included all students of University of Tabriz in 2024, of whom 341 were selected by convenience sampling. Data collection was carried out using the Traits of Personality Questionnaire (TPQ), Problematic use of the Internet questionnaire (PIUQ), and Cognitive Emotion Regulation questionnaire (CERQ). Path analysis was used to analyze the data using the Spss 26 and Amos 24 software. The results showed that the dark triad of personality and online social communication have a positive and significant relationship (p<0.05), and a positive and significant relationship was found between maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and online social communication (p<0.01). The indirect effect of the dark traits of Machiavellianism and narcissism and resentment on online social communication was positive and significant (p<0.01). However, the indirect effect of the trait of psychopathy on online social communication was not statistically significant (p<0.01). The findings indicated a favorable fit of the research model, and according to the findings of this study, mental health professionals, with awareness and reliance on this model, can focus on adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies to reduce the destructive effects of dark personality traits on online social communication.
