Abstract :
Background and purpose: For the treatment of high blood pressure, drug therapy methods are often used, which include the long-term use of numerous chemical drugs. Drug therapy has many unwanted side effects along with high health care costs. The purpose of the present study is to investigate and compare the effect of music therapy on hypertension in middle-aged and elderly patients.
Materials and methods: In the present experimental study, 60 patients (30 middle-aged and 30 elderly) with primary hypertension in Zanjan city in the year 1402 were selected by multi-stage cluster random sampling and randomly divided into four groups of 15 people (middle-aged test group, elderly test group, middle-aged control group and elderly control group). The music chosen by the participants was performed for 30 minutes on even days for 2 months for the test groups. Blood pressure changes of the participants were measured, recorded and compared before, during and after the intervention. The data was analyzed by SPSS software version 26.
Results: The results of the paired sample t test showed a greater decrease in the average systolic and diastolic blood pressure (with p-value less than 0.05) of the test groups compared to the control groups. Also, the results of the ANCOVA test in addition of confirming the result of the paired sample t test, revealed that the effect of music therapy on reducing systolic and diastolic blood pressure is greater in middle-aged people (with an effect size of 0.933 and 0.885, respectively) than in the elderly (0.838 and 0.304).
Conclusion: Music therapy is effective in reducing blood pressure in patients with primary hypertension, and this effect is more prominent in the middle-aged group.
