Evaluation of the impact of vegetation on thermal comfort in high-rise residential complexes (Case study: Residential complex located in District 6 (Mount Derak) of Shiraz city)

Abstract :
Well - designed green spaces and vegetation can improve urban environments and thermal comfort . Through transpiration and shading , vegetation cools the surroundings , mitigating the urban heat island effect and decreasing human heat stress . Thus , strategic vegetation design is essential for enhancing thermal comfort and microclimate . Studies on thermal comfort in urban open spaces, particularly neighborhood parks , highlight their sensitivity to small - scale green spaces . This study employed the ENVI-met model to evaluate the impact of vegetation on the thermal environment of an open space within a a high - rise residential complex . Results showed that increasing vegetation cover led to improved thermal conditions , with broadleaf vegetation patterns offering superior performance due to greater shading . However , excessive vegetation density could potentially reduce cooling efficiency. These findings underscore the importance of vegetation in mitigating urban heat and improving thermal comfort, while highlighting the need for careful vegetation design.
