Abstract :

This study investigates how metaphors in architecture enhance spatial experience, focusing on their evolution and current applications as powerful tools for design. The research problem centers on understanding the influence of metaphors on human spatial interaction, especially within shifting cultural, technological, and social contexts. The study aims to elucidate how non-linguistic metaphors function as cognitive structures that convey complex ideas, thus enhancing the user’s architectural experience beyond mere visual symbolism. Our hypothesis posits that non-linguistic metaphors act as frameworks for cognitive engagement, embedding deeper understanding into physical space. Key variables include metaphor types (literal vs. abstract), contexts, and historical-cultural paradigms, which influence design outcomes. Employing a qualitative approach, the study analyzes historical and contemporary architectural examples, from Vitruvius’s embodiment of human form in classical architecture to modern and post-modern examples where metaphors derived from nature, technology, and culture provide new interpretive dimensions. Methodologically, the research applies an interpretive framework grounded in architectural semiotics and metaphor theory to assess the impact of metaphors on user interaction. This approach evaluates metaphorical visibility and interpretive complexity, demonstrating how both explicit and implicit metaphors enhance cognitive engagement with space. Findings reveal that metaphors are not merely decorative but integral to conveying architectural meaning, creating spaces that resonate emotionally and intellectually. Metaphors in architecture enhance spatial experiences, bridging cognitive engagement with emotional and intellectual resonance. Examples include the explicit natural forms in Paxton’s Crystal Palace and the abstract layers in Eisenman's Wexner Center, showing that successful designs often integrate layered metaphors for deeper interpretation. The study concludes that non-linguistic metaphors offer architects a robust tool for embedding meaning, fostering cognitive and emotional engagement, and thus enhancing the human experience within built environments. This structured approach to metaphor usage offers valuable insights for future designs seeking functional and interpretive coherence.
