Abstract :
The optimal shape of dams is very important because of their effects on the calculation and implementation costs and the damage caused to them. Thus, this study aims to check the application of the optimization algorithm for the optimal design of the shape of double-arched dams. To evaluation of the performance of the method used, the Morrow Point Dam was selected as a real structure and optimized under different conditions against the El Centro earthquake. The concrete volume is as the objective function and 20 geometrical parameters are as the design variables of the dam. The Abaqus, artificial neural network (ANN) models, and the optimization algorithm of the artificial bee colony (ABC) were used to reduce the volume of concrete at the Morrow Point dam. First, the dam's Abaqus model was built. Then one hundred similar geometries were randomly created from the model and used for ANN training. Of them, 70% for model training, 15% for model calibration, and 15% for the ANN model testing used. Then, optimization was done by the ABC algorithm in two different cases. In case one, the value of the objective function was equal to 239229 m3, and in case two (optimized state), the volume of concrete used was 238150 m3. The convergence process showed that the value of the objective function in the optimal case has decreased with time compared to the first case. In general, it can be said that the used approach is appropriate and can be used in other optimization problems
