Abstract :

 The genus Artemisia, with about 500 species distributed worldwide, is the largest genus in the tribe Anthemideae and one of the greatest genera in the family Asteraceae. Artemisia chamaemelifolia Vill. is widely used in the pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic and perfumery industries due to its diverse chemical compounds with a wide range of biological activities. The aim of this research was to investigate the percentage of essential oil (EO) and the diversity of EO chemical compounds in four populations of the native species A. chamaemelifolia from natural habitats in order to define chemotypes and select appropriate ecotypes. For this purpose, aerial parts of A. chamaemelifolia were collected at the flowering stage from Qazvin, Gilan and Mazandaran provinces. Extraction of EOs from the flowering aerial parts was done by hydrodistillation method. The EOs were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively using GC and GC/MS devices. According to analysis results, the main compounds in A. chamaemelifolia populations were: Qazvin: Artemisia ketone (34.6%); Gilan: 1,8-cineole (46.0%) and cis-nerolidol (16.7%); Mazandaran-Tonekabon: 1,8-cineole (28.0%), cis-nerolidol (22.7%) and trans-linalool acetate oxide (21.8%); Mazandaran-Chalus: artemisyl acetate (23.7%), trans-linalool oxide acetate (16.7%), yomogi alcohol (16.3%), selin-11-en-4-α-ol (11.0%) and cis-nerolidol (7.0%). Considering the main constituents of the EOs, four chemotypes including, artemisia ketone (Qazvin), 1,8-cineole/cis-nerolidol (Gilan), 1,8-cineole/cis-nerolidol/trans-linalool oxide acetate (Mazandaran-Tonekabon) and artemisyl acetate/trans-linalool oxide acetate/ yomogi alcohol (Mazandaran-Chalus) were identified for A. chamaemelifolia ecotypes. According to results, EOs of A. chamaemelifolia populations are rich in diverse and bioactive oxygenated constituents, which are widely used in various industries.
