Abstract :

The present research examines the types of total reduplication processes in Sirjani dialect using a descriptive-analytical approach. This description and analysis grounds in Prince and Smolensky's (1993/2004) Optimality Theory, which employs a constraint-based approach to phonology, morphology, and syntax. Twenty poorly educated male and female Sirjani speakers aged between 40-65 years were randomly selected for this research. Linguistic data were collected from library sources and interviews with Sirjani speakers. Then the data were classified and ranked based on the type of processes that take place as the result of the interaction of faithfulness constraints and markedness constraints. The research results showed that total reduplication process in this dialect is realized in the forms of: 1) non- added total reduplication and 2) added total reduplication, where the latter, in turn, is used in the forms of 1) medial added total reduplication with the suffix /-ā/, 2) ) medial added total reduplication with interfixes /-ā-/, /-mo-/, /-tā-/, and /-be-/ and 3) final added reduplication. Furthermore, the data analysis suggests that to achieve an optimal output, any form of total reduplication manifests its constraints and ranking within the Optimality tableaux.
