Abstract :

The present research investigates the various types of total reduplication processes in Sirjani dialect using a descriptive-analytical approach. This description and analysis is based on Prince and Smolensky's (1993/2004) Optimality Theory, which employs a constraint-based approach to phonology, morphology, and syntax. Twenty male and female Sirjani speakers (aged 40 to 65) with little formal education were randomly selected for this study. Linguistic data were collected from library sources and interviews with Sirjani speakers. The data were then classified and ranked based on the type of processes that occur due to the interaction between faithfulness constraints and markedness constraints. The results showed that the total reduplication process in this dialect is realized in two main forms: 1) simple total reduplication and 2) total reduplication with morphological markers. The latter, in turn, appears in the following forms: 1) medial augmented total reduplication with the suffix /-ā/, 2) medial augmented total reduplication with the interfixes /-ā-/, /-mo-/, /-tā-/, and /-be-/, and 3) final augmented total reduplication. Furthermore, the data analysis indicated that to produce an optimal output, each type of total reduplication exhibits its own specific constraints and ranking in Optimality Theory tableaux.
