A Survey of medical graduates' opinions about medical education at Islamic Azad University of Mashhad 2015

Abstract :
Introduction: The most important group to take feed backs in educational works are students and graduates of each university course. The aim of this study was to evaluate the opinions of the medical students in their last semester in about their medical education. Materials and Methods: In a cross sectional study the standard Persian version of AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) Graduation Questionnaire was distributed between 90 medical students of Mashhad Islamic Azad university of medical sciences in their last semester, and received 56 back (response rate, 62.2%).All of the questionnaires were completed anonymously, and each contains 262 questions. Data was entered in SPSS V.20 statistical software and descriptive results were reported. Results: About 66% of the respondents felt that Basic Science content objectives were not made clear to students. Assessment of the students about their clinical clerkship and internship rotations was not very favorable. Overall 46% of the respondents were satisfied with the medical training they received. Respondents indicated many deficiencies in the curriculum, and in their competences. Exposure to numerous activities was rated by respondents as being inadequate: "geriatrics and gerontology education" (85%),"Problem-solving skills” (84%), "Medical Statistics" (82%),"Law and Medicine " (85.7%), and "rehabilitation" (82%). Around 50% of the respondents reported that they have not been taught sufficient clinical skills in preparations for their future clinical practice. Only 25% of the respondents felt that they had acquired adequate knowledge and skills to start residency training. Conclusions: This study illuminates some of the aspects of the curriculum the faculty needs to address in order to prepare physicians effectively and efficiently for clinical work. It can be used as a tool to find the trends in order to revise the curriculum.
