Abstract :
Background: Recurrent aphthous lesions are among the most prevalent pathologic ulcerative conditions in oral mucous with 5-50% prevalence. Various studies are trying to find an appropriate treatment with low side effects. Purpose: Comparison of therapeutic effect of injective corticosteroid and Myrtus herbal solution in treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis Method: Patients who refer to ENT clinics of Arya, 22 Bahman and Farabi hospitals of Mashhad were chosen and were divided into two groups of 40 and were treated by one of the methyl prednisolone acetate or Myrtex drugs. Assessment of healing changes and level in aphthous lesions was done in 3, 5, and 7 days after beginning of treatment. Decrease in pain and irritation in addition to number and size of the ulcers and also lack of development of new ulcer were considered as clinical healing indices. In order to determine level of ulcer’s pain and irritation, VAS criteria was used. Results: In our study, no statistically difference was seen between two therapeutic groups, before and after the treatment, concerning level of pain differences and mean of ulcers’ number (p-value=0.767 and p-value=0.855, respectively). Also in the present study, no side effect which is related to treatment with Myrtex drug was observed. Discussion: Myrtex drug contains Myrtus extract can be as effective as methyl prednisolone acetate in the treatment of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Regarding to the lower side effects of this herbal solution and more interest of patients and also therapeutic system to use of herbal drugs, Myrtus extract could be an appropriate substitution for treatment of this disease.
