Responses of different wheat cultivars to post anthesis drought stress

Stem-stored carbohydrate from pre-anthesis period had an important role in supporting assimilates for growing grain in drought stress during grain filling period. An experiment was conducted in 2007-8 in experimental farm of Islamic Azad University of Arsanjan, to investigate the quantity of stem reserves in different wheat cultivars of different heights. The randomized block, split-plot design was used in the experiment. Main plots consisted of three irrigation regimes (full irrigation, only one irrigation in post-anthesis and without irrigation during post-anthesis period) and subplot consisted of six wheat cultivars (Marvdasht, Falat, Ghods, Karaj3, Adl and Kaveh). At physiological maturity, grain yield, biological yield, yield components, plant height and stem weight were measured. The results showed that water holding in post-anthesis period significantly reduced grain yield, biological yield, grain weight and stem weight. Grain yield, biological yield, harvest index, number of ear m-2, number of seed ear-1 and plant height were significantly different in different cultivars. The interaction effects of cultivars and irrigation indicates that different cultivars respond differently to reduction of irrigation. By withholding post-anthesis irrigation the adverse effects of drought on grain weight and grain yield in tall cultivars were lower in comparison with dwarf cultivars. Losses of stem weight with irrigation withholding were higher in tall cultivars. These results indicates that tall cultivars have more stored reserves in stem, which can be used in unfavourable condition for grain filling. In other words, remobilization is higher in tall cultivars and this trait can be used for developing drought tolerance in breeding programs. انه، ارتفاع ساقه و وزن ساقه اندازه گیری شد. نتایج نشان داد که قطع آبیاری پس از گلدهی باعث کاهش معنی دار عملکرد دانه، عملکرد بیولوژیک، وزن هزار دانه و وزن ساقه گردید. همچنین ارقام مختلف از نظر عملکرد دانه، عملکرد بیولوژیک، تعداد سنبله در مترمربع، تعداد دانه در سنبله، ارتفاع ساقه و وزن ساقه اختلاف معنی داری با یکدیگر دارند. مقایسه اثرات متقابل رقم و آبیاری نشان داد که ارقام مختلف واکنش متفاوتی نسبت به قطع آبیاری پس گلدهی نشان می‌دهند بطوریکه با قطع آبیاری پس از گلدهی، وزن هزار دانه و عملکرد دانه در ارقام پابلند به میزان کمتری در مقایسه با ارقام پاکوتاه کاهش یافت. همچنین کاهش وزن ساقه با قطع آبیاری در ارقام پابلند بیشتر از ارقام پاکوتاه بود. این نتایج حاکی از آن است که میزان ذخایر ساقه موجود در ارقام پابلند برای استفاده در دوره پر شدن دانه، بویژه در شرایط نامساعد، بیشتر از ارقام پاکوتا است. به عبارت دیگر انتقال مجدد در ارقام پابلند بیشتر است که این ویژگی می تواند برای توسعه ارقام مقاوم به خشکی در برنامه‌های اصلاحی مورد استفاده قرار گیرد.
