Abstract :
Introduction: Lack of attention to two-way rural-urban flows, especially in developing countries such as Iran, will lead to imbalances and deep gaps within geographical regions and areas in the spatial developments of rural and urban settlements in the socio-economic, environmental-ecological, and physical-infrastructural dimensions.
Research Aim: The purpose of the present study is to investigate and analyze the impact of rural-urban spatial flows on the spatial developments of peri-urban settlements.
Methodology: The present study is applied in terms of purpose and descriptive-analytical in terms of method. Data collection was carried out in two ways: library and field. In addition, field survey method was used to collect field data in relation to indicators, items and measures of the influential component of the independent variable (rural-urban flows) and the affected variables (spatial changes of peri-urban settlements). The statistical population of the study is 83 villages of Damavand County, Statistical Center of Iran, based on the 2016 census. Considering the homogeneity of the study area, the facilities and limitations of the research, in the first step, 29 villages were selected as a random sample based on the central limit theorem using the probability and simple random sampling method. In the second step, the Cochran sample size calculation formula was used to estimate the sample size.
Studied Areas: The present study, which is in the field of two-way rural-urban flows, was conducted in Damavand County
Results: The findings of this study showed that rural-urban flows in rural settlements of the studied area have an impact on the spatial changes of peri-urban settlements by changing the dimensions and size of the village population, land use, housing, and rural investment.
Conclusion: Rural-urban linkages have social, economic, and physical-infrastructural capacities that create spatial flows such as the flow of goods and services, people, technology and information, capital, and waste between cities and villages. Overall, a positive and significant relationship was observed between spatial flows such as the flow of people, goods, services, investment, and information on the dimensions of spatial developments in rural settlements.
