Investigating the relationship between belonging to urban and subjective well-being of Tehran citizens (A study among citizens over 18 years of age in Tehran)

Abstract :

This study aimed  to investigate the relationship between belonging to the city and the mental well-being of citizens over 18 years of age in the city of Tehran. The theoretical framework of the research was provided by the Higgety and Fitzpatrick approach. The research method is quantitative and "descriptive / analytical". The research population consisted of all residents over 18 years of age in Tehran, which according to the latest census is 675,000 thousand.  Sample size was estimated to be 385 which was increased to 400 individuals. The data collection tool was a questionnaire whose total reliability was calculated to be 0.89. The sampling method was multi-stage cluster. the normality of the data was evaluated using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the relationship between the variables and Pearson correlation coefficients were measured using SPSS 22 software. Findings showed that there was a significant and positive relationship between spatial belonging (0.49), emotional belonging (0.24), cognitive belonging (0.46) and practical belonging (0.46) with citizens' mental well-being. Multivariate regression results showed that the social belonging variable explains 0.31 of the changes in the subjective well-being variable. The results of this study indicated that attachments cause people to make rational preferences, make social investments, be sensitive, and thus moderate their negative motivations, resulting in feelings of satisfaction and happiness.               Key terms: sense of belonging, urban subjective well-being, spatial belonging, cognitive belonging, practical belonging.
