Abstract :
This research work describes the development strategy of microparticles with a hybrid configuration consisting of an inorganic part and an organic part. The inorganic part consists of silica gel (SiO2) with a diameter ~34 nm embedded in an organic polymer particle consisting of dimethyl malonate polymer (DMM). Anionic polymerization has been modified to incorporate SiO2 nanoparticles in a controlled manner in the polymer matrix. A design of experiments was identified and conducted to identify the main process variables that affect the final particle size. In particular, since polymerization of DMM may be fully initiated in the presence of hydroxyl anions, pH was found to control the overall diameter of the final particles between 300 nm and 1 µm. The overall loading of inorganic particles can be easily changed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows that the colloidal stability of the hybrid microparticles depends on the ligand coating the inorganic component. This initial research provides a synthetic basis for evaluating the coating properties of nanoparticles and their self-assembly into new materials in the future.
