Introduction: Quality of life is one of the important indicators of mental health that affects the ability of parents to cope with challenges and play social roles. Parents who adopt an orphaned child face more psychological and social pressures and challenges. Acceptance and commitment-based group therapy with a focus on accepting experiences, adhering to values, and increasing psychological flexibility can improve the quality of life of these parents. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment-based therapy on improving the quality of life of couples who adopted an orphaned child.
Method: The research method was a semi-experimental design with a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up with a control group. The research population included all adoptive couples who referred to the Tehran Welfare Organization in 1401 who had adopted a child over two years old. Of these, 30 people were selected by purposive sampling and randomly divided into experimental and control groups of 15 people and answered the World Health Organization (1996) Quality of Life Questionnaire in three sessions: pre-test, post-test and follow-up. The subjects in the experimental group underwent acceptance and commitment training in groups for 10 sessions, 1 session of 60 minutes per week, but the control group was not given training. The data were analyzed with SPSS software using mixed analysis of variance and Bonferroni post-hoc test and a significant level of p<0.05.
Findings: The results showed that there was a significant difference between the quality of life scores in the pre-test, post-test and follow-up stages, and the difference between the post-test and follow-up scores was also significant.
