Extended Abstract
Introduction
The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between the safety of sports facilities and the development of sports tourism during sporting events based on the ANP (Analytic Network Process) model. Sports tourism has gained significant traction in recent years, becoming a vital component of the global tourism industry. This growth is attributed to the increasing number of international sporting events, which not only attract participants but also spectators and tourists from various regions. Given the increasing importance of sports tourism and its impact on local and national economies, this research seeks to identify and analyze the factors that can influence the attraction of sports tourists.
Methodology
The research method employed was applied, descriptive, and field-based, conducted in the year 2024 (according to the Persian calendar). The study population consisted of 1,500 athletes participating in national competitions in paintball, tennis, and bodybuilding in the city of Karaj. Participants were selected from the Mehrshahr Tennis Club, Tornado Paintball Club, and the Karaj Revolution Stadium. Using Cochran's formula, a sample size of 306 individuals was determined to ensure statistical validity. The inclusion criteria for the study included completing a consent form, active participation in national competitions, and being aged between 18 and 30 years. The exclusion criteria involved individuals not being in an appropriate mental state while filling out the questionnaire and those who failed to complete the questionnaire fully.
The research instrument was a researcher-made 61-item questionnaire assessing the safety of sports facilities, designed to measure the safety and security of sports environments. This questionnaire included questions regarding various aspects Descriptive statistics such as mean and standardof safety, hygiene, and available facilities in sports venues. The items were developed based on a thorough literature review and expert consultations to ensure content validity. deviation were used to analyze the data, while the ANP method was employed for prioritizing criteria using Excel and Super Decisions software.
Results
The findings revealed several critical factors affecting the perceptions of sports tourists at national sporting events. Among the most significant were the lack of cleanliness and dryness in restroom and shower entrances, insufficient spacing between equipment, absence of appropriate fire safety and protective equipment, lack of regulations to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, and inadequate electrical wiring safety and installation of switches and sockets. These factors indicate a pressing need for improvements in safety and hygiene conditions in sports facilities, which can significantly impact the overall experience of tourists.
In addition to the quantitative data, qualitative insights were gathered through open-ended questions in the questionnaire, allowing participants to express their views on safety issues. Many respondents highlighted their concerns regarding the maintenance of facilities and the presence of trained staff to manage emergencies. This feedback underscores the importance of not only having safety measures in place but also ensuring that they are effectively communicated and enforced.
Discussion and Conclusion
The conclusion of this research indicates a strong relationship between the safety and security of sports facilities hosting national or international sporting events and the attraction of more sports tourists. The results showed that the safety of sports facilities is one of the most important criteria for sports tourists when selecting venues. Tourists are increasingly aware of safety standards, and their willingness to travel for sporting events is often contingent upon the perceived safety of the facilities.
Moreover, the study emphasizes the necessity of focusing on safety and hygiene in sports environments. It suggests that federations and relevant organizations should take necessary actions to improve these conditions to enhance sports tourism development in the country. This includes regular inspections of facilities, training for staff on emergency procedures, and the implementation of hygiene protocols that align with international standards.
In light of these findings, it is recommended that policymakers and sports organizations collaborate to create a comprehensive framework for enhancing safety in sports facilities. This framework should include guidelines for facility design, maintenance, and operational procedures that prioritize the health and safety of athletes and spectators alike. Additionally, investing in public awareness campaigns can help inform tourists about the safety measures in place, potentially increasing their confidence in attending events.
The implications of this study extend beyond the immediate context of sports tourism. By improving safety standards in sports facilities, cities can enhance their reputation as safe destinations for international events, thereby attracting more visitors and boosting local economies. Furthermore, the findings contribute to the broader discourse on sustainable tourism, highlighting the importance of safety and hygiene as integral components of the tourism experience.
In conclusion, the relationship between the safety of sports facilities and the development of sports tourism is multifaceted and critical for the growth of this sector. As sports tourism continues to evolve, ensuring the safety and security of facilities will be paramount in attracting and retaining sports tourists. This study serves as a call to action for stakeholders at all levels to prioritize safety in their strategic planning and operational practices, ultimately fostering a more robust and sustainable sports tourism industry.
