Dosimetric Analysis of Cognitive Impairment (Anxiety) Following Radiotherapy for Head and Neck Cancer and Brain Tumors Based on Treatment Planning System

Abstract :
Radiotherapy is a common method for treating cancer, but it can have unintended side effects such as memory-related neurocognitive disorders (anxiety). The aim of this study is to investigate the dosimetry of memory-related neurocognitive disorders (anxiety) caused by radiotherapy for head and neck cancer and brain tumors based on treatment planning systems. This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in 2024 at the Isfahan Radiotherapy Center. It involved 30 patients with head and neck cancer and brain tumors who underwent radiotherapy using various treatment planning systems. The doses received by brain structures related to memory (amygdala) were calculated using the treatment planning systems and compared with the incidence of memory-related neurocognitive disorders (anxiety). Data analysis was performed using SPSS-24 software and analyzed through statistical tests. The results showed a significant correlation between the doses received by memory-related brain structures and the incidence of memory-related neurocognitive disorders (anxiety). Specifically, higher doses to the amygdala were associated with an increased risk of developing memory-related neurocognitive disorders (anxiety). This study suggests that accurate dosimetry of memory-related brain structures during the design of radiotherapy treatment for patients with head and neck cancer and brain tumors can help reduce the risk of developing memory-related neurocognitive disorders.
